ASIAN PADDLE CRAB MONITORING 2021
The year 8's had a great time setting Crab Pots and monitoring for Asian paddle crabs with the team from Envirokiwi. This exotic species is very invasive as it can reproduce and spread rapidly. This would put pressure on not only our native paddle crab for food and habitat but all of the estuary biodiversity that rely on the shellfish being plentiful. Fortunately, no pest crabs were found (but if they were, they are apparently good eating) so that was a great outcome indeed and we will keep monitoring for a few seasons yet to be sure!
Thomas took us to a meeting with the Great Barrier Island Local Board (who fund this project) where we explained the operation, presented our findings, and answered any questions.
